The Latest in the Sweet Science
It's been a while since I've blogged about boxing, so here's a few random thoughts:
DeLaHoya-Mayweather II looks to be a done deal for September, as long as Oscar wins a tune-up fight in May, presumably against junior-welterweight Steve Forbes (way to man up there, Golden Boy). I didn't give Oscar much of a chance the first time around (and felt vindicated, despite the judges' scoring), but I may give him a better shot this time around with Floyd Sr in his corner. The Mayweather soap opera will be on full display for the build-up on this one, even more than last time since Floyd Sr is up against his son and brother. I've said before, until he actually loses, don't bet against 'Money' Mayweather.
Also official for April is Hopkins-Calzaghe, on HBO and not PPV. This fight will probably be ugly, but I'm really looking forward to it. Calzaghe will try to prove himself on American soil, while Hopkins looks to add yet one more name to his legacy. Most are picking Joe in this one, but I expect that Calzaghe will have to fight on Bernard's terms, which doesn't bode well for the Welshman. His status as an all-time great isn't in question, but a win for Hopkins makes him arguably the most accomplished fighter of the last 20 years, and puts him in serious contention once again as the pound-for-pound #1 fighter in the sport. Absolutely remarkable for his age. I'll be rooting for him.
Three potential fights of the year are also coming up soon: Pavlik-Taylor II, Pacquiao-Marquez II, and Vasquez-Marquez III. Neither of these should disappoint. Boxing's comeback continues to march onward.
