Trying to Rein In The Government's Extra-Constitutional Power
From last week, the Senate voted to limit the CIA's use of enhanced interrogation methods on suspects, including waterboarding (hopefully that also includes beatings and rape). President Bush, however, would rather skirt the Constitution and the Geneva Conventions so we can continue to attain "accurate" and "timely" information. This should be no surprise, though, as the last 7 years have demonstrated that President Bush does not have time to deal with such antiquated ideals as due process and rule of law.
Does torture work? The Army says these methods not only produce faulty information, but put our soldiers' lives in danger. But another thing we've learned during Bush's execution of the war on terror is that he won't let such antiquated standards like accurate information stand in his way.
How did our presidential aspirants vote?
Senator John McCain, a torture victim who should know better, voted against the measure. Apparently Johnny McRaygun's quench for authoritarianism and his desire not to torpedo his Republican nomination was more important than upholding his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. Principled beliefs be damned during an election year.
At least he had the decency to show up and vote.
Civil Rights Lawyer Barack Obama once again had better things to do than uphold his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, as he was a no-show for this vote.
Likewise, Senator Hillary Clinton didn't feel it was necessary to uphold her oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, as she was also a no-show in the Senate.
How are we supposed to believe Obama or Clinton when they say they'll undo the problems created by President Bush if either one wins the election when neither one bothers to do so when the opportunity arises in the present??!!
